‘In the South African winelands you will find some of the oldest viticultural soils in the world, traceable back to the first super continent some 1000 million years ago’, Wines of South Africa
Together with these ancient soils, soaring mountains and perfect climatic conditions, the natural Cape environment is blessed with exceptional biodiversity. Our winelands are located in the Cape Floral Kingdom being one of six in the world, with over 9600 plant species and is a world heritage site.
Preserving this unique natural heritage is critical to Franschhoek Cellar and we actively support an industry wide Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI) in partnership with various conservation movements. This determination is tangibly displayed through the South African Integrated Production of Wine scheme that provides minimum guidelines to farm sustainably as custodians of our vineyards for future generations. From 2010 vintage, certification of wine from South Africa now bears a sustainability seal that guarantees adherence to the IPW guidelines.
